The Citizen Science Engagement Fellows program is a collaborative academic–student affairs initiative focused on identifying and organizing a civic engagement cocurricular experience for first-years during their January term. Instrumental in designing opportunities to explore concepts of community service, civic engagement, and science education, Engagement Fellows can explore their own ideas about engagement in the community.
During the pandemic, the Citizen Science Engagement Fellows program was paused. We hope to welcome a new class of Engagement Fellows in the 2022-2023 academic year.

Emma Bernstein ’20
Emma Bernstein ’20
Emma is a senior in the mathematics department. She uses her coursework to develop activities, puzzles, and games for the Center for Civic Engagement’s STEM outreach team as well as for Bard’s Teacher Leader Scholar Program and Math Circle. She also works as a math tutor on campus and in the local community. Emma was a Citizen Science Engagement Fellow during the January 2019 term. She has been involved with CCE for several years, acting as a fellow for the Study of the U.S. Institutes international civic engagement program and participating in the Get Engaged Student and Youth Leadership Conference. Emma is a member of the Equestrian Team and practices yoga in her free time. -
Yuval Elbaz ’22
Yuval Elbaz ’22
Yuval is a sophomore from New York City. She is an intended Human Rights major, with a concentration in Political Studies. She is an activist both on and off campus, which shows in her dedication inside the classroom and in her job at the Center for Civic Engagement. Yuval is part of the outreach strand at CCE. She got involved with this work during her first month at Bard, as she feels giving back to the community she is a part of is important. She has worked with children for more than five years in many different capacities, from being a teacher’s assistant at a preschool to interning at an organization that represents children in court for domestic violence cases. In the past year, she has created her own workshops through CCE about the science of food and environmental sciences, making them creative and accessible so that children can joyfully engage in science. When Yuval isn’t helping run a STEM fair or studying in the library, she is dancing and helping seniors with their performances. Dancing fuels Yuval to be the best version of herself and to seamlessly flow through her different interests and responsibilities. -
Tessa Greenhalgh ’20
Tessa Greenhalgh ’20
Tessa is a senior majoring in Environmental and Urban Studies. Her academic focus is mainly on food studies and agricultural studies. During her time at Bard she has studied abroad twice (first as a Begin in Berlin student and then in Perugia, Italy, in the spring of her junior year). In addition to her work at the Center for Civic Engagement, she also works at the Admission Office and in the Office of Athletics and Recreation. Tessa also works as a butcher for the Applestone Meat Company once a week. In addition, she enjoys cooking up something new, kicking a soccer ball around with her roommates in Tivoli, and, in winter, skiing as much as possible. -
Mehreen Kabir ’20
Mehreen Kabir ’20
Mehreen is a senior studying Mathematics and learning more about pedagogy through practices. On Tuesdays, she dedicates her time as a Precalculus tutor, helping students who probably do not read the textbook. During the year, she is an active STEM outreach fellow and works on science experiments with local middle school students. She also coleads a TLS project called the Girls Math Club, where she empowers young girls to have confidence in solving difficult math puzzles. When she is not working on homework, you can find her playing video games—her favorite game right now is Overcooked. -
Megumi Kivuva ’22
Megumi Kivuva ’22
Megumi is a sophomore at Bard hoping to major in Computer Science, with a concentration in Experimental Humanities. Born in Kenya and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Megumi has lead science outreach programs since ninth grade. Her favorite experiments are lava lamps and the Split Demo Tank. When she’s not doing science, you can find her cooking and singing her favorite show tunes. -
Sam Shear ’22
Sam Shear ’22
Sam is a sophomore majoring in Environmental and Urban studies, with a focus on environmental education and urban planning. He plays Frisbee with the Bard Ultimate team. Sam generally loves to be outdoors, and you can find him camping, hiking, climbing, kayaking, or just doing homework on a lawn or in a hammock. Sam joined CCE because he loves science and education, and being a STEM fellow is the perfect way for him to combine those two interests. Sam secretly loves comic books, and if you mention them to him he’ll nerd out.
